    • When you’re self-managing your NDIS plan, the NDIS may conduct a review or audit to check that you’re using your funds correctly. Audits and reviews can sound intimidating, but they’re routine and simply ensure that your supports match your needs and your spending aligns with NDIS guidelines. In this module, we’ll cover how to prepare and what to expect.

    • What is an Audit?

An audit is a check conducted by the NDIS to see if you’re using your NDIS funding as planned. Audits are often random, and they don’t mean you’ve done something wrong. The NDIS may look at your spending records to confirm you’re following your plan.

    • What is a Review?

A review is a meeting or process to discuss how well your current plan is working. It’s a chance for you to:

      • Talk about your goals and how you’re progressing.
      • Discuss any changes you may need to your supports.
      • Adjust your funding if needed.

Most reviews are done regularly, like once a year, and help make sure your plan is still suitable.

Learn more about plan reviews on the NDIS website.

    • Preparing Your Documents

To be ready for an audit or review, keep the following records organised and up to date:

      1. Your Current NDIS Plan: A copy of your plan that outlines your goals and funding details.
      2. Invoices and Receipts: All invoices and receipts for services you’ve paid with NDIS funds (e.g., therapy sessions, equipment).
      3. Bank Statements: Records from your bank account used for NDIS funding.
      4. Service Agreements: Copies of all current and past service agreements with providers.
      5. Progress Reports: Reports from your service providers on how supports have helped you reach your goals.
      6. Quotes: Keep any quotes you received, even if you didn’t use those providers. They can help explain your spending choices.
      7. Notes on Any Changes: Keep records of any changes in your support needs since your last plan review.
      8. Contact Information: List of contacts for all your providers, including their names, phone numbers, and email addresses.

Having these documents ready can make an audit or review much simpler.

    • What to Expect During a Review
      1. Initial Meeting: Your review will start with a meeting with an NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC). This can be done over the phone, in person, or via video.
      2. Discussing Your Supports: During the review, you’ll talk about the supports you’ve used, any progress you’ve made, and any changes you want to your plan.
      3. Outcome and Next Steps: After the review, the NDIS will give you feedback and possibly an updated plan. You’ll get the chance to review and agree to these changes.
    • If You Disagree with the Outcome
      • You can request a Review of a Reviewable Decision (RoRD) if you’re not satisfied with the decisions made in your plan. This must be done within three months of receiving your plan.
      • Consider seeking help from an advocacy service to ensure your concerns are heard.
    • What to Expect During an Audit
      1. Notification: If selected for an audit, you’ll receive a notice from the NDIS explaining what they need to review.
      2. Submission of Documents: You’ll be asked to submit invoices, receipts, and other relevant documents. Make sure these are organised and easy to read.
      3. Audit Review: The NDIS will review your documents to confirm that your spending matches your plan.
      4. Outcome and Follow-Up: After the audit, you’ll get feedback. If any issues are found, the NDIS will help you resolve them and provide guidance on managing your funds.

Tip: Regularly updating your records will keep you prepared in case of a random audit

    • Activity: Organise Your Audit Checklist
      1. Look over the list of documents above and see if you have each item in place.
      2. Set up a folder (physical or digital) where you can store these documents together.
      3. Add a reminder to check your records monthly to keep everything up-to-date.
